At the weekend, the 24-hour action days took place for the fire brigade youth and the youth group from the Red Cross.

Lustenau It is the highlight of the Floriani disciples: Once a year, the Lustenau fire brigade organizes an Action Day for their offspring – a day on which they are called to fictitious operations. There they apply what they have learned, consolidate their knowledge and get a taste of the often demanding operations of the trained firefighters. Now, for the first time since the pandemic, the youngsters can look forward to a 24-hour Action Day. From Saturday to Sunday noon, they were ready for action day and night with their beeper. The Red Cross youth group also took part in the Action Day and cared for the injured during the exercise scenarios.

“The aim is to give them as realistic an insight as possible into the work of the fire brigade. In addition to extinguishing the fire, this also includes rescuing people, regulating traffic, using the fire extinguisher or removing a slick of oil,” explained firefighter Milos Zivanovic. Together with his fire brigade colleague Daniel Steinhofer, he prepared the top-secret missions for the young people in the best possible way.

Act quickly and correctly

One of the first accidents to which the young people were called was a traffic accident in Rasis Bündt. Two cars collided and a motorcyclist passing by was thrown by the debris. “A scenario that we often have to deal with,” said Zivanovic. Then it had to be quick. “When the beeper went off, we changed our clothes and drove to the scene of the accident,” said Lio Ritter from the young fire brigade. “We only had the information that it was a technical emergency with several people trapped. That’s why we put on our first aid gloves,” added Aurel Feuerstein (15). The Red Cross youth treated the motorcyclist and the unconscious passenger in the car. The fire brigade directed the traffic, helped to rescue the person and removed the oil slick. An interaction that already works very well in youth groups.

The operations were closely observed by paramedics from the Red Cross and the fire brigade and discussed after each exercise. “You did the exercise very well. Now you can go back to the fire station. Who knows when the next alarm will come,” said Zivanovic. And it wasn’t long in coming: In the case of a liquid fire in the parking lot in front of the brothel, the youth fire brigade and those from the Red Cross were allowed to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher. The youngsters were nervous before the night: “I hope I hear the beeper when I sleep at night,” said Nino Larcher (11). Since he doesn’t drink coffee, he prepared himself for this special 24-hour shift by doing push-ups. “It keeps me fit,” he said.

For the eight rescuers from the Young Red Cross in Lustenau and the 21 young people from the young fire brigade, this action day was packed with adrenaline and excitement. They were divided into two groups and called out to a total of 13 missions over the 24 hours. “The preparations for the Action Day are always very extensive. But it’s worth it and our offspring take a lot of it with them,” said co-organizer Milos Zivanovic about this year’s Action Day. vs
