Faced with the skyrocketing of the dollar and the impossibility of the Government to draw up a plan that reduces inflationary indices, the conduct of lhe General Confederation of Labor (CGT) issued a document in which it demanded the call for a “great political, economic and social consensus that promotes development, production and work as instruments towards a horizon of growth with social justice”.
After seven months, the board of directors of the workers’ union returned to meet in full with signals for within the unionism, the ruling party and the opposition. There they could see the three General Secretaries, Pablo Moyano, Héctor Daer and Carlos Acuña.
Although there is a manifest discontent of the leaders about the management of the Government, the call of the CGT is given in the framework of different reformist debates, where the opposition proposes a series of modifications in the labor legislation. Faced with this, he issued a document where he stated that “Argentine society is going through a complex economic and social crisis, inherited and aggravated by a scenario of macroeconomic instability that manifests itself through a growing inflationary escalation that pulverizes the purchasing power of wages; shortage of foreign currency, labor informality and a process of increase in its structural poverty, unacceptable for Argentina, which reaches 40 percent of our people, condemning millions of Argentines to marginality and putting social cohesion at serious risk “.
According to a union spokesperson consulted by iProfesional, the CGT declaration began to take shape on Monday, after the business call was announced at the Llao Llao Forum, where the opposition presidential candidates presented everything from the dollarization of the economy to the prosecution of the labor protest.
Harsh warning from the CGT: “There is no margin for economic deterioration”
The labor union remarked: “Inflation and poverty rates must top the priorities for the adoption of urgent measures and actions. The entire leadership in general must become aware that there is no more room for economic deterioration without the risk of social decomposition.”
It was within this framework that he called for “the call for a great political, economic, and social consensus that allows basic agreements to be reached for the design of a medium- and long-term program” and warned that “short-term speculations from a pre-electoral stage do not postpone the generation of strategic agreements, within a model of sustained and inclusive growth”.
After seven months, the CGT met again to ask the government and the opposition for a “great consensus”.
Immediately afterwards, he stressed: The political leadership, without partisan distinctions, without differences between officialisms or circumstantial oppositions and with the responsibility of being depositories of the trust and representation that the citizenry grants them through the vote, must assume the commitment that fits in the succession of recurring crises that over the years have led our country to the current situation”.
The request of the CGT: minimize the crisis and promote economic recovery
In a climate of discussion but without confrontations or billing, the CGT leadership put aside the inmates and gave a show of unity in their demandsmaking it clear that the Government and the opposition “each one in their role, must assume the commitment to establish themselves as guarantors of collective well-being, both to minimize the effects of the crisis as well as to promote socioeconomic recovery and establish the pillars for a sustained, sustainable and inclusive growth in the medium and long term”.
He stated that “the economic and social context is so serious that it does not allow personal or sectoral speculation; only through the instrumentation of majority consensus based on a set of State policies aimed at putting into operation the productive potentialities it has.” our country, is that we will get out of the current crisis. Regarding its role, the CGT promised to defend, fiercely and actively, the inalienable rights and interests of workers” and added that it is willing to “contribute with its contribution and participation in the construction of a great national consensus based on in production and work, which favors the growth of productive investment and the generation of formal work with rights”.
In the statement signed by the entire board of directors, The following demands were raised, point by point:
- The defense of the national productive apparatus and the implementation of policies that promote genuine employment
- The promotion of Argentine work through export practices with added value.
- Strengthening health and social security systems.
- The promotion of a process of upward social mobility and a fair redistribution of wealth that reverses the concentration of income and promotes balance in the capital-labor relationship.
- Regain economic independence to avoid that our sovereign decisions are not conditioned by goals and interests foreign to the nation.
- Demand for a greater commitment to corporate social responsibility in the price-forming sectors.
- The need to achieve greater citizen participation in all the affairs of the nation to strengthen democratic institutions.
- The reconstruction of a State that promotes development, that protects the strategic resources of all Argentines and that exploits our wealth in a sustainable and sovereign manner for the benefit of all of society.
- Guarantee that these activities do not aggravate environmental problems.
- Address the changes in work associated with information and communication technologies, artificial intelligence and the automation of production processes, promoting dialogue between the social actors involved, in order to activate the necessary regulatory mechanisms that make it possible to make the scientific-technological revolution an instrument of transformation for development with social inclusion.
To summarize, the CGT maintained that “it is necessary to implement an economic model of inclusive growth, which favors the culture and value of work, which equitably distributes the fruits of this effort, assuming that the rights of workers are the necessary condition for a society with more and better opportunities for individual and collective prosperity”. And he closed with the sentence: “No one is fulfilled in a community that is not fulfilled.”
