The least we can say is that Indiana Jones 5 is a highly anticipated film. But one choice in particular is likely to be debated. Explanations:

Within the long list of films of 2023 if there is one feature film that is expected among all the others, it is good Indiana Jones 5. It will be 15 years since we last saw the adventurer with the hat and the whip embodied by Harrison Ford. And that starts to do a lot, especially when you’re a fan. The project Indiana Jones 5 was first announced in 2016 and while director Steven Spielberg, who helmed the first four films in the series, was initially attached to the project, it was ultimately James Mangold who got the honor. For better or for worse ?

Indiana Jones 5 and technology.

We know this fifth episode of the saga Indiana Jones should allow to admire for a few scenes a Harrison Ford rejuvenated by more than 30 years for the good of the scenario. In particular thanks to the famous De-aging technology. For the record, de-aging, also known as digital age reduction, is a technology that allows directors to make actors look younger on screen. One of the most notable examples is the film The Irishman by Martin Scorsese. In this film, actors Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci were rejuvenated to play their characters at different times in their lives and despite a few mistakes, it was still quite stunning.

The de-aging technology in question.

There are several methods of de-aging: the first is motion capture, which involves using sensors to track the actor’s movements and facial expressions. The second method is facial data capture, which uses special cameras to capture 3D images of the actor. And the third is artificial intelligence. This is also the one that was used by Disney in the film Indiana Jones 5. The researchers behind the AI, known as FRAN explained that it only works with real people if there are images available. Which is obviously the case for Harrison Ford. And if we could think that the scenes of this type were going to be a little gimmicky in the film, it will not be the case at all.

A choice that will be debated

Indeed, in an interview with director James Mangold in Total Film, the man explains that young Indy will have the right to 25 minutes of appearance on the screen, all in the opening scene. This is likely to be debated because we can already imagine the fans accusing too much use of technology. Will the de-aging destroy the acting or make the scenes unrealistic? It’s hard to say but for the moment the technology does not seem to be developed enough to last. We obviously hope that this will not spoil the experience for Indiana Jones 5.

On your side, what do you think of the use of such a process in a film like Itougha Jones ?
