As of today, the electronic control of using a cell phone while driving, not wearing a seat belt, and making wrong turns through the cameras installed in the City of Buenos Aires. These traffic violations were sanctioned manually. The modernization of the camera system, they said in the City government, will allow for better control. Until yesterday, the offenses that were monitored through the cameras were the speeding and red light crossings. Now they will add these faults.

According to the latest annual report on fatalities presented by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, During 2021, 96 people died as a result of a road accident. Speeding was recorded in 6 out of 10 fatal accidents. And in 3 out of 10 accidents with deaths there was a red light violation.

With respect to cell phone at the wheelcompared to previous years, it was observed an almost triple increase in drivers using cell phones at the wheel: when a driver looks at the cell phone for 3 seconds at 40 km/h, he travels 33 meters blindly. For this reason, they indicated from the GCBA, the main objective of the second Road Safety Plan is to continue reducing fatalities and modify risky behaviors behind the wheel, inspection is one of its most important axes.

With state-of-the-art equipment, the first stage focused on controlling two of the most risky behaviors in terms of road safety: speeding and crossing red lights. The characteristics of the current camera system allow the incorporation of new functionalities: thanks to this, the control of the use of cell phones at the wheel, the seat belt and improper turns will be added.

The state-of-the-art cameras, they indicated, represent a technological advance that allows, among other things, to improve the process of notifying the offending neighbor and the generation of higher-quality evidence. All the devices that compose it report in real time and they are a great source of data for mobility planning and management.

They are 215 cameras that from today will monitor these risky behaviors behind the wheel in the City. All of them are identified with signage and can also be viewed in mobility applications (such as Waze, Google Maps and other similar).

The location criteria were analyzed according to the type of conduct to be inspected: for example, for the cameras that detect red crossings, the most dangerous intersections, with the greatest pedestrian risk and with the greatest circulation, are identified as transfer centers. While those that detect prohibited turning are placed at intersections where turning is prohibited.

The first implementation of the electronic control system of which there is a record in the City of Buenos Aires dates from the year 2000. Since then, the number of fatalities per year has been decreasing considerably: until 2021 it was reduced by 39%.
