You are currently viewing iOS 17: Check your privacy settings after the update

Many Apple users are currently installing the new iOS 17.

However, some people noticed that the update changed their previous privacy settings. Specifically, it’s about the location services and app analysis – some of them are active again after the update.

Data protection not 100% as before

The developers and security researchers at Mysk provide information about this on X, among other places:

?Attention: iOS 17 turns these sensitive location options back on. If you disabled key locations and adding location information to your iPhone analytics before upgrading to iOS 17, iOS 17 will re-enable these options as shown in the screenshot.

And further:

Although Significant Locations remain local to your iPhone, they can be misused because they record detailed information about the places you frequently visit. iPhone analytics, on the other hand, are shared with Apple. If your location information is included in these analytics reports, it may impact your privacy, even if you are not identified in the reports.

Security experts have always advised disabling these two options.

Go to the Settings app: Privacy & Security ➡️ Location Services ➡️ Scroll down to System Services ➡️ Find these two options and turn them off:

? Significant locations
? iPhone analytics

After updating to iOS 17, it’s best to follow this tutorial to stay on the safe side. It is unclear why the settings are changed in this way by the update. Apple has not yet commented on this.
