It seems that finally with the iPhone 15 the inevitable moment will come in which Manzana will have to get rid of the Lightning port to finally migrate to the universal standard of the USB-C. But now a disturbing rumor has emerged that suggests that the Cupertino boys would have an ace up their sleeve.

And it is that we have witnessed in recent years how the regulations imposed by the European authorities finally seem to have paved the way for the USB-C port to be established as the new universal connector for all types of smartphones regardless of their mobile operating system.

Since October 2022, we have witnessed how the European Parliament imposed the year 2024 as the limit for technology firms to start using this plug in their devices marketed in that territory, which includes the iPhone.

This measure is marked as a clear precedent for a new standard that could well be imposed in different markets where this company has a presence and distributes its products.

But something that nobody counted on is that yes, Apple could abandon the use of its Lightning port and cables, but it could still impose another class of restriction filters to use its new cables.

Which would effectively be USB-C, but would work the same with proprietary technology so that the phone distinguishes when an original accessory is used or not.

Apple could use proprietary USB-C cables for the iPhone 15

From 9to5mac comes a disturbing and relatively uncomfortable report, where it is revealed that in fact the iPhone 15 could finally integrate the use of USB-C ports.

But Apple would still have developed a Lightning-compatible PCB that would integrate into any USB-C cable made by the company.

So a firmware could be run so that any iPhone with a USB-C connector can immediately recognize whether or not the cable is original from Apple.

With this, the company could restrict the interactions that the smartphone could have with other devices or accessories outside the owners created and sold by the firm.

Although this is mere speculation and there is no certainty about what kind of restrictions Apple could impose. Although months ago there was talk of conditioning the transfer of files at high speed only for the Pro and Pro Max models.

The key point will be to see what the company does with support for USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 specifications when it implements USB-C ports.

So for now you have to take everything with reservations.
