The notch in the display of the iPhone 14 Pro, introduced by Apple with the peppy name Dynamic Island, could only have a short stint. At least that’s what various analysts with contacts to supplier companies in Asia claim. They assume that as early as 2024, the sensors for face recognition Face ID will be installed under the display in the iPhone 16 Pro for the first time. Two years later, with the iPhone 18, the camera cutout could also disappear. That could also be the end of the dynamic island, which acts as a kind of additional display.

The South Korean trade magazine The Elec reportsthat Apple will initially expand the Dynamic Island to all four models with the iPhones this year, including the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. In the iPhone 14 generation of 2022, this was initially reserved for the two Pro models, while the standard models retained the notch protruding from the top of the display, which is often called the notch. The display cut-out was previously necessary to accommodate the selfie camera and the Face ID sensors. Due to the narrow edge, there is no other suitable place

In 2024, the Pro models could then be delivered with the iPhone 16 for the first time with Face ID sensors under the display panel. The Elec apparently refers to sources close to Samsung, which makes the screens for Apple. Allegedly, Samsung has already ordered the necessary machines for the production.

This plan fits with statements made by analyst Ross Young, who has contacts with display manufacturers. He already published a roadmap in May 2022 – but at the time with the proviso that the technology really had to be mature and the costs of production remained within limits.

A year later, in 2025, according to his forecast, the iPhone 17 would first be followed by the standard models with Face ID under the panel, before in 2026 with the iPhone 18 the camera under the display could also disappear. A year later, in 2027, the standard models would follow. By then at the latest it would make little sense to keep the Dynamic Island with its current appearance. Apple just made the element the anchor point for live notifications and audio players in iOS 16.
