Apparently, Apple doesn’t just want to get rid of Qualcomm as a chip supplier. While one is still dependent on the US group’s 5G modem, Broadcom’s Bluetooth and WiFi chip should at least be replaced by an in-house creation by 2025 at the latest.

Like the US Economic Service Bloomberg citing sources close to Apple, future iPhones are to be equipped with a Bluetooth and WLAN chip developed by the US computer company itself. So far, Apple has always installed solutions from the supplier Broadcom.

According to the report, Apple has started to develop its own Bluetooth and WLAN chip in order to free itself from the dependence on Broadcom. This is anything but good news for Broadcom, because the US group has so far generated around 20 percent of its sales from supplying Apple with the chips.

Apple plans smooth transition to in-house radio chips

However, the conversion to Apple’s own radio chip for Bluetooth and WLAN will not happen all at once. Instead, there will probably be a gradual introduction, so that initially only certain models in the iPhone series will be equipped with the new Apple chips.

Apple is probably planning a similar approach for the 5G modem. Qualcomm Snapdragon modems have always been used in this area, but they have been trying to develop their own alternative for years. However, the project stalled massively, which is why Apple is now planning to introduce its own 5G modem internally at the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Initially, these new chips could only be used in certain devices in order to test their suitability for the mass market. It is speculated that Apple will initially only equip the cheaper versions of the iPhone series with its own 5G modem before the more expensive Pro models, which are sold in larger quantities, are to follow suit.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm apparently already expects Apple to be able to successfully implement its own 5G modem project in the coming years. For the 2025 financial year, the US chip specialist is only expecting a “minimal” share of its sales from sales to Apple.
