More than 150 businesses in Iran have been closed the day after the entry into force of a new plan by the police, which notably uses surveillance cameras and facial recognition to control the wearing of the veil by women, compulsory since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
“Unfortunately, the police had to seal 137 shops and 18 restaurants and reception halls in the country for not paying attention to previous warnings” related to the obligation of the veil, said the police spokesman, Said Montazerolmahdi, quoted by the Tasnim agency.
This toughening comes at a time when more and more women are defying the compulsory dress code, in particular the wearing of the veil, since the start of the demonstrations triggered by the death in detention, on September 16, of Mahsa Amini, arrested for breaching the strict code. clothing.
Car owners notified by text message
Police have warned that car owners will also receive a warning message if a female passenger breaks the dress code. They risk having their vehicle seized in the event of a repeat offence.
“During the last 24 hours, several hundred cases of not wearing the veil in cars have been recorded by police inspectors and car owners have been informed by text messages,” added Said Montazerolmahdi.
At the end of March, the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, warned that all women who removed the veil would be “punished”.
