Although treated as antagonists over the last century, medical science and spirituality have bridges of contact and could develop mutually if the partnership were not a taboo. That’s what the book stands for “Science of life after death”which will be released on 5/26 during the 4th Conupes (International Congress of Science and Spirituality), in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.

The book was written by psychiatrists Alexander Moreira-Almeida and Marianna Costa and by philosopher Humberto Schubert Coelho, all of them from the Center for Research in Spirituality and Health at the Faculty of Medicine of the UFJF (Federal University of Juiz de Fora).

In the work, the researchers gathered 150 scientific works done around the world on themes that are usually considered supernatural. The articles deal with case studies of past life memories, mediumship, out-of-body experiences, and near-death experiences.

One of the evidence presented on the possibility of an after-death consciousness is a study carried out in the United States in 2001 with people who had cardiac arrests and then were “resuscitated”. According to the work, about 10% of them reported supernatural near-death experiences. Some patients have reported these experiences in detail even eight years after these events.

In an interview with metropolisesthe authors of the book spoke about the main themes of the work and the importance of the sciences also focusing on that which has no explanation outside the field of mystery.

According to the authors, the research gathers evidence that the human mind can exist beyond the biological and chemical part of the brain, even existing after-death consciousness.

Are science and spirituality divided by a wall or connected by a bridge?

Moreira-Almeida: “The book does not deal with religions, but with how more than 150 academic articles have understood the theme of spirituality. If we are faced with human experiences that suggest an independence of the mind in relation to the brain, we have to ask ourselves if it is fraud, if it is the unconscious, if it is hallucination… And if it is none of these, we must be open to other answers than it would .”

Marianna: “Separation is the result of a modern vision. I think that, especially since Freud, when he makes a strong opposition to religiosity, there has been a confusion between religion and spirituality, but, in the last 200 years, several scientists have dedicated themselves to studying spiritual phenomena with the necessary scientific rigor. ”

Rabbit: “Spirituality in the contemporary world is associated with irrational thinking, without criteria, and this makes people assume that faith is the antithesis of science. The concept of spirituality, however, has evolved a lot over time and I think we will have more openness to discuss it scientifically in the coming years.”

Should psychic experiences be considered by science more seriously?

Moreira-Almeida: “We observed that this type of experience has already been studied, our book does not bring new studies, it only brings together several publications, more than 150 published over two centuries. What is missing is that part of science opens the eyes to these studies as it has been done in the most prestigious universities in the world. Oxford, for example, already has nuclei that research these themes.”

Marianna:“Certainly. They are phenomena that exist and have always existed in different times and civilizations. Like any phenomenon of nature, it deserves attention from science.”

Rabbit: “This type of experience should have greater consideration of science, respectful treatment, protocol. Phenomena must be studied as they are. Even the dismissal of an idea can only be done on the basis of scientific examination.”

How can this connection with spirituality help therapeutic work?

Moreira-Almeida: “We have to understand what the mind is made of, that it can be more than simple chemistry and biology. I am a psychiatrist, I use medication all the time on my patients, I know the chemical aspect and its importance, but I also have a keen eye to understand that it is not only substances that alter the mind, but that the opposite also occurs.”

Marianna: “I think it’s important because, from a therapeutic point of view, health professionals have to be ready to accept the spiritual issues of their patients. Furthermore, these studies advance understandings of the nature of the human mind and this concern should not be overlooked.”

Rabbit: “All science can help in therapeutic work. Spirituality deals with very fundamental questions for patients, with what is sacred to them, with what goes beyond the value of the individual. It would be presumptuous if we ignored what the patient says is determinant for him.”

How did the desire to investigate the topic arise in you?

Moreira-Almeida: “We wanted to carry out a systematic survey of sources to understand how these phenomena were treated by science. I have worked with these themes for over 25 years and have always approached them respectfully. We have to have the scientific rigor both to analyze an object and to refute it.”

Marianna: “Many people have had anomalous experiences in the general population. A survey of 256,000 people from 52 countries, for example, found that at least 12.5% ​​of people claimed to have experienced something anomalous. This is something that piques our curiosity to understand these phenomena.”

Rabbit: “I never had a spiritual experience in the sense that the book analyzes, but I have a spiritual experience. I think that precisely because of this, I am in a position of someone who can maintain interest in the topic, but the distance necessary to understand it as research.”
