ISIS claims responsibility for an attack that killed 20 in Syria and vows to continue fighting

The radical militia has sleeper cells in parts of Syria that continue to carry out attacks despite their defeat in the country in 2019. ISIS came to control large parts of Syria and Iraq where it declared a caliphate in 2014.

According to the statement released late Friday, insurgents ambushed two army trucks in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour using different types of weapons. ISIS further said that 40 army personnel were killed and another 10 wounded.

Syrian opposition activists said Thursday night’s attack on a bus carrying soldiers near the town of Mayadeen left at least 20 people dead and several wounded. The state media, for their part, reported several deaths and injuries but did not offer specific data.

“Let the entire world know that our loyalty to our leaders is practiced in deeds and not in words and that our jihad will continue until doomsday,” ISIS said.

Last week, the group announced the death in Syria of its leader, Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi, who was not well known and had led the extremist organization since November, and named his successor. He was the fourth leader to be killed since US troops killed the founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in northwestern Syria in 2019.
