The new European Parliament confirms its support for Ukraine and highlights the cordon sanitaire to Orbn’s “false patriots”
The new European Parliament has confirmed this Wednesday its support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion and The sanitary cordon was evident around the group of Patriots for Europe –promoted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán–, the third force in the European Parliament, and which several MEPs have branded as “false patriots”.
Together with the alliance of Patriots for Europetwo other far-right groups, The Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Europe of Sovereign Nations, together hold 187 of the 720 seats in the European Parliament.
However, the cordon sanitaire does not seem to apply to ECR, which on Wednesday aligned itself with the rest of the forces, from the right of the European People’s Party (EPP) to the Left, to reaffirmed EU support for Ukraine in a thematic debate that kicked off the plenary session this Wednesday in Strasbourg (France).
“A victory for Ukraine is the only thing that can put an end to the Russian invasion after two years of this barbaric war,” said the ECR MEP. Joachim Stanislaw Brudzinski (ECR), to make its position clear in the debate, while claiming that Russia, which “uses its force to weaken democracies around the world“, must be “held accountable” because “there is no peace without justice.”
