The Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has a new submarine called BlueWhale presented. The unmanned underwater vehicle is to be used for reconnaissance and to detect and investigate threats.

According to the IAI, the submarine has already spent thousands of hours underwater in tests conducting autonomous operations. BlueWhale uses Radar and electro-optical systemsto scout targets in the water and on shore. That reports the Times of Israel.

Sonar should be able to detect both manned and unmanned submarines in the area. Sea mines can also be mapped as they say. The information collected is sent via Broadband satellite channel forwarded to the command center.

The spy submarine is operated with a battery pack, which can supply power continuously for up to 4 weeks. The manufacturer also notes that the submarine in a 40ft sea container can be transported.

Protection for critical infrastructure

Such submarines could be used more frequently around the world in the future, for example at critical infrastructure better protected in the oceans. For example, pipelines or underwater cables (e.g. for the Internet) are unprotected from possible attacks over long distances. Unmanned boats could enable extensive surveillance of those in order to detect threats in good time and to be able to react to them.
