Italy asks Brussels to review its recovery and resilience plan

Brussels, Aug 7 (EFECOM).- Italy presented this Monday a request to review its recovery and resilience plan and to add a chapter that would include new reforms within the framework of the European strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels ( known as REPowerEU), reported the European Commission.

Italy has proposed in particular to review 144 investments and reforms related to the six thematic areas of the plan (the so-called “missions”).

They concern digitization and competitiveness, the ecological transition, sustainable mobility, education and research, inclusion and cohesion, and health.

On the other hand, the new chapter proposed by Italy includes the development of renewable energies, the promotion of ecological skills in the public and private sectors, the fight against subsidies that are harmful to the environment and the improvement of biomethane production, Brussels said. .

It also foresees three main areas of investments, related to the improvement of energy networks, energy efficiency and strategic supply chains.

Brussels explained that Italy’s request to modify its plan is due to the need to take into account existing difficulties worldwide, “including high inflation and limitations in the supply chain.”

The Commission will now evaluate whether the modified plan continues to meet the evaluation criteria established in the regulations, Brussels said.

If the evaluation is positive, the Commission will present a proposal for a Decision modified to reflect the changes in the Italian plan and the Council (EU countries) will have up to four weeks to approve the evaluation.

The €800 billion Recovery and Resilience Fund supports coordinated planning and financing of infrastructure, as well as energy projects and reforms to, among other things, accelerate the green and digital transitions and increase the Union’s resilience. EFECOM
