Italy wants to limit the number of holiday homes. The Italian government is examining measures against mass tourism and wants to introduce stricter rules for short-term rentals. Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanche complained about a “wild west” in vacation homes. “The few applicable rules are being disregarded,” criticized Santanche in an interview with the Roman daily “Il Messaggero” (Tuesday edition).

“We need real regulation and we are also waiting to see what the EU will work out. “I have started talks with all business associations, I am listening to the various demands and then we will determine new rules,” said the minister.

Only a few exceptions planned

Exceptions to the new regulation are small villages where there is no accommodation and where short-term rental is the only solution. “For us private property is sacred and when a family decides to rent a room it is not right to stop them. But the situation is different if you rent 20 apartments,” said the minister of “Fratelli d’Italia”.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government plans to take stock of all apartments that are rented out for short periods. “As soon as we have a complete picture, we will take action,” said the minister.

Venice wants to set limits

In the fight against mass tourism, the city of Venice in particular wants to set limits on the rental of holiday apartments. The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, wants to ensure that apartment owners who rent short-term are only allowed to do so for a maximum of 120 days a year. The aim is to promote long-term rentals and living in the city center. At the same time, the historical, cultural and ecological heritage of the city should be protected.
