Introduction: So-called self-tracking is becoming more and more popular. Millions of people measure their health and fitness data using smartwatches, bracelets or apps. Self-tracking offers many possibilities, but there are also critical voices. Petra Terdenge reports:

Narrator: Critics say that the self-collected data can exert a psychological pressure that not everyone can cope with. But many people benefit from it and can motivate themselves better to do sports. There is no generally valid answer as to whether self-measurement is good for us overall or maybe even harmful, says Marisa Gold from the pharmacy magazine:

“It can’t be said in general terms, because it’s incredibly individual. Of course, that can also lead to dissatisfaction, but in the first step it’s an incredible motivation for many people when they simply measure themselves and in the curve really see an improvement.”

Narrator: It is important to use the technical possibilities sensibly. There are good uses for self-measurement, not only for fitness, but also for our health:

“It is incredibly relevant, especially for people who suffer from diabetes, for example, that they can already measure their blood sugar automatically and receive corresponding signals if they slip into hypoglycaemia. That is of course incredibly valuable. But also in the leisure sector, for example this can be used during sleep.”

Speaker: Because around a quarter of Germans complain of sleep disorders. With the help of trackers, they have the chance to find out how good or bad their sleep quality is. Self-tracking opens up even more perspectives:

“It’s incredibly conceivable, for example in the care sector, that data can be used to shorten the time it takes to care for people and become faster. But there are already clinical studies, for example, where it has been proven that recorded ECGs are relatively reliably detect atrial fibrillation. There is certainly still a long way to go.”

Moderation: If you want to get an overview of the various possibilities of self-tracking, you will find information and tips in the pharmacy magazine. Among other things, there are field reports, for example for the use of wearables when jogging, for better sleep or for diabetes.
