• The layoff plan that continues at Meta creates a feeling of fear among employees
  • Some of them criticize senior executives for not setting an example
  • Lower costs are also felt

2023 is meant to be “the year of efficiency” at Meta, according to Mark Zuckerberg’s wishes. But according to the testimonies collected internally by le New York Times, it is currently the year of fear and disillusionment. While the Tech giant announced a vast layoff plan of 21,000 people and the cancellation of 5,000 hires, the atmosphere is clearly deleterious within the company.

Erin Summer, who was laid off at the end of last year, describes the company’s situation as follows: “Many employees feel uncertain at the moment. They say it’s like The Hunger Games meets Her Majesty of the Flies, where everyone tries to prove their worth to management. »

In fact, Meta is not done with layoffs yet. These dismissals should even concern engineers soon, something that was considered impossible until now.

A “cut-throat” atmosphere

While waiting for this ax, everyone strives to show that they work hard and are essential to the group. We are also witnessing a decrease in collaboration between colleagues and we are sometimes in it’s every man for himself, which is never good for a company. A source from the American newspaper describes the atmosphere in the premises as “cut-throat”.

At the same time, and while management insists that employees return to work more in the offices, some senior executives are working remotely from all over the world: New York, London, Tel Aviv. Their absence was felt according to our colleagues. For his part, a spokesperson for Meta explains that these leaders are often on the premises.

While Meta used to be one of the most popular companies for Silicon Valley employees, things seem to have changed since last year, following a cost-cutting policy. This is the case with the end of the free laundry service, while some employees complain of a reduction in choices in the cafeteria.

For its part, the group’s management responded only marginally to this survey, explaining that it did not wish to comment on internal affairs. Be that as it may, these fears felt by employees are not really surprising. A scary atmosphere has already been described a few months ago at Google. You can always read our article about it here.
