I've spent years looking for the best zombie game and it's always been right under my nose.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who think that everything is better with zombies and those who have bad taste. Just kidding… or not so much. As a fan of zombie movies and video games (unless they include them), I’ve spent a good part of my life looking for the ultimate zombie experience.

I’ve played more zombie video games than I care to remember, some good and some not so good. Without searching or looking on my shelf, those that I liked the most are: Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 Remake, Left 4 Dead 2, The Last of Us 1 and 2, World War Z, State of Decay 2, Back 4 Blood and days gone. Bend Studio will tell you that their bugs are spawns and not zombies. 4 years have passed, time to cut the roll: they are zombies. I never liked COD zombies and I haven’t even played Day Z.

My perfect zombie video game is like The Day Before, but without selling so much smoke and being true. The only ones on the list who managed to keep me plus 100 hours Hooked were State of Decay 2 and Days Gone, and both share (more or less) the same features: an open world to explore, fairly normal zombies, and resource management.

The perfect zombie video game has spent 13 years right under my nose

Undead Nightmare It’s become my perfect zombie video game… And it’s been right under my nose for 13 years! It is a DLC for Red Dead Redemption (2010) and was released a few months after the main release. I had played the adventure of John Marstonbut I never bought the post-launch content due to lack of money… and by the time I started having it, it was already buried by other video games.

Now, thanks to red dead redemption port for PS4, I have played it for the first time and the experience has been wonderful. Everything good I’ve heard so far is true and it’s criminal that Rockstar just ported it. I love westerns and zombies. If you put them together, you have the ultimate video game.

The story of Undead Nightmare It begins with a very classic zombie movie tone: darkness, mystery and a powerful voice that narrates the events that are taking place to put us in context: John Marston He returns home unaware that a night of terror awaits him. Uncle transforms and bites Abigail, who in turn bites Jack. She kills the old man and leaves his wife and son tied up in a room to go out in search of the cure.

And that’s it. History and motivations raised in a few minutes. Before I know it, I’m in Blackwater shooting small hordes of zombies. I make the rookie mistake of taking it out on zombies and I’m left without ammunitionso I have no choice but to run through the streets straight to the objective of the mission.

I find a lady torn between being happy or sad because her drunk dad is now a zombie. She hints at a couple of very shady things and then she mentions that the best I can do is clean up the city and purge the graveyard.

The cemetery looks like a birthday: all the dead coming out of their graves and me running up and down to kill them all. It’s the most standard task in videogames, but here I am enjoying it like a kid: I kill groups of zombies with the Dead Eye, I roll to avoid hits and perform Special Executions when they get too close. I am a mix between john wick and django.

I return to the city to finish cleaning it of zombies and make it safe. Before leaving, I find a group of survivors arguing about who will have the leadership and it doesn’t take long for them to take out the dirty village clothes: what if menganito has been thrown to menganite, that if you are a cuckold and more string of gossip. And don’t laugh, what the walking dead it has worse seasons and better not to mention resident Evil. In short: a zombie kills them and I finish them off.

The map shows me three locations where I can help to get weapons, ammo and other rewards. And here I go! I’m starting to realize that the dynamics of the DLC are absurdly simple and addictive: kill zombies to get ammo and use the ammunition to kill zombies. Saving people is a side effect of my enjoyment of destroying zombies. Bullets are the bargaining chip.

One of the locations where I can help is the MacFarlane Ranch. I would like to say that I went because I am a being of light, but in reality I helped in the area in the hope that Bonnie was alive. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but let’s just say that the young woman’s eyes do little sparkles every time she sees John.

While cleaning the ranch, I learn a great lesson: the Tomahawk they are broken against normal enemies. They can be used as a melee weapon to perform an execution or thrown for a ranged kill. They stick to enemies and can be picked up by searching the corpse. I’m glad to know that Bonnie is alive, but now my only love is zombie killing. I continue my way!

I find the nut Seth when starting the story mission cinematic. The grave robber is in his sauce, since he already spoke with the dead even before the apocalypse. I come to the conclusion that all this mess may be caused by an artifact, a glass eye? I don’t get too clear, I just have to clear all cemeteries marked and that my next stop is Armadillo…another fairly populated place. Next week I’ll tell you how the rest of my story went in the best zombie game in the world!
