Jalen Hurts is about to sign one of the biggest contracts in NFL history after agreeing to a $255 million, five-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The agreement includes a guaranteed amount of 179.3 million guaranteed.

The Eagles announced Monday that “QB1 is staying” but contract details were not released, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized.

Hurts is rewarded after a season in which he established himself as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. He was a finalist for the AP Most Valuable Player award and led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The leader is still in Philly,” the Eagles tweeted. “We have agreed with Jalen for a 5-year extension until the 2028 season.”

Hurts, 24, aims to earn $51 million per season. Only Deshaun Watson (230 million) and Kyler Murray (189.5 million) had received more money in a contract.

Hurts stood out in the Super Bowl with a record-breaking performance. He passed for 304 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 70 yards and three scores, plus tied the game with a two-point conversion.

Philadelphia was 14-1 in games he started. He had 3,701 passing yards, 760 rushing yards and a total of 35 touchdowns in the regular season.

Under head coach Nick Sirianni, the Eagles finished as the NFC’s top seed, beating the New York Giants in the playoffs and the San Francisco 49ers in the conference finals.

The Eagles lost the two games Hurts missed late in the season because of a strained right shoulder.

The franchise surprised when it took Hurts from Oklahoma in the second round of the 2020 draft. They had Carson Wentz as the firm starter at quarterback and had other, more pressing needs.

Hurts was going to be Wentz’s backup, but he ended up taking the job from him and becoming one of the brightest young quarterbacks in the NFL.
