Interviewed by Premiere in 2015, the director revealed that he was more amazed by Johnny Depp’s work on the search for Bulger’s personality rather than on the physical change: “The physical transformation is relatively easy, Johnny is used to doing it for all his roles. But the most important thing is the inner transformation: how to go from the extremely gentle man that Johnny is in reality to the psychopath that he is embodies. We worked closely to give shape to it and find nuances in the performance. Did Johnny Depp cut his hair to Strictly Criminal ?
The makeup teams literally merged the face of Whitey Bulger onto that of Johnny Depp. Although the actor would have been able to cut his hair, he nevertheless sported a wig and silicone elements designed by Harlow. The wigmaker and hair special effects manager, Khanh Trance, took care to attach thousands of hairs, one by one, to the silicone to create the hair implantation and the gangster’s eyebrows. The silicone elements had a lifespan of 24 hours, so the team had to make new ones every day: “At one point, there were two people assisting Khanh for 12 hours each, 24 hours a day. We also had to arrange for the aging to be gradual: we accentuated the gray of the hair and ensured that the scalp becomes thinner. As for the favorites, they evolved over the years.”
