Judge orders Prince Harry to compensate tabloid for defamation

LONDON.- He prncipe Harry was sentenced on Monday by a British judge to pay 48,447 pounds (60,780 dollars) to the publisher of the Mail on Sunday newspaper after losing one of the cases in a defamation process against the tabloid.

Among the numerous demands filed by the youngest son of King Charles III against British newspapers, one of them referred to an article relating to his police protection when in the United Kingdom.

The text, published in February 2022, accused, incorrectly according to his defense, Harry of having lied and of having tried to keep secret his appeal against the government to try to obtain police protection in the country. After the Duke of Sussex’s lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday was rejected on Friday, the British justice system ordered him on Monday to pay 48,447 pounds before December 29.

Protection in the United Kingdom

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle lost systematic police protection, paid for by the British taxpayer, after deciding to leave the royal family in 2020 and settle in the United States.

The king’s son, who sometimes has to resort to private security, paid for with his own resources, had requested to be able to benefit from police protection when in the United Kingdom, but this request was rejected by the courts in May.

But the prince has initiated a second process on this issue, in which he challenges the decision that denies him systematic police protection when he is in the United Kingdom.

This appeal against the British Home Office refers specifically to the decision taken by the authorities in February 2020 to grant him police protection in certain cases and not systematically when he is in the country.

Following the three-day hearing last week, the decision is in the deliberation phase.
