Mexico City.- After receiving instructions from Judge Brian Cogan on the way in which they should analyze the evidence, the members of the jury that will decide on the guilt or innocence of the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, began deliberating this afternoon.

The jury is made up of 12 citizens chosen at random, who over the last four weeks listened to the accounts of the 27 witnesses presented by the Prosecutor’s Office, including three drug traffickers who claimed to have paid millionaire bribes to the former police commander, and the only witness offered by the defense, who was the wife of the former Mexican official.

The members of the jury must decide if, beyond any reasonable doubt, the Prosecutor’s Office managed to prove that García Luna is responsible for three counts of conspiracy and cocaine trafficking, one for belonging to a criminal company and one more for having lied to the authorities. migratory

Each of the members must answer, in a verdict sheet, if they consider the defendant guilty or not guilty of each of the charges of which he was accused.

For each of the charges, the jury must resolve unanimously and it may be the case that they find you guilty of some crime and not guilty of another.

The deliberation of the jury will be done behind closed doors without a specific period and once they obtain a verdict they will notify the judge.

During the hearing this Thursday, the defense of the former Secretary of Public Security insisted that it be considered that he left the federal government since 2012 and therefore, if that were the case, that he participated in a criminal organization giving him protection, this It hasn’t happened anymore for more than a decade, so the crimes would be prescribed.

However, the Prosecutor’s Office opposed this argument, pointing out that after 2012 García Luna continued to have contact with corrupt police officers who were his former collaborators, such as Ramón Eduardo Pequeño and Facundo Rosas.
