“She died peacefully while I caressed her,” Atsuko Sato said in a message on her blog, in which she thanked fans around the world for the love shown to Kabosu.

Kabosu also inspired the logo of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, created in 2013, whose popularity skyrocketed thanks to the support of Elon Musk.

“The Doge is the most popular dog of the modern era, she is the Mona Lisa of the internet,” one of her unconditional fans recently told AFP.

Since Kabosu had been adopted from a shelter, her exact age was a mystery. Sato, who gave an interview to AFP a few weeks ago, believes she was about 18 years old.
