Dallas, Tx.- A man who did not want his girlfriend to have an abortion shot her to death in a Dallas parking lot, police said. The man is in jail on murder charges.
In September 2021, Texas banned abortions after approximately six weeks of gestation, but almost all abortions have stopped in Texas since the Roe v. Wade was voided in the middle of last year, except in cases of medical emergency.
Gabriella Gonzalez, 26, was with her boyfriend, Harold Thompson, 22, Wednesday when he tried to strangle her, according to an affidavit accompanying the warrant. González had returned the night before from Colorado, where she had gone to have an abortion.
“It is believed that the suspect was the father of the child,” the affidavit states. “The suspect did not want (González) to have an abortion.”
Surveillance video from the parking lot shows González “getting off his back,” police said, and the two continue walking. Thompson then pulls out a pistol and shoots González in the head. She falls to the ground and Thompson shoots her multiple times before fleeing, according to the affidavit.
Thompson was arrested later Wednesday and is being held in the Dallas County Jail without bail.
Gonzalez’s sister was at the scene and heard the shots, police said. Another witness saw Thompson try to strangle González, but he couldn’t call police because he didn’t have his phone number.
At the time of the attack, Thompson had been charged with assault on a family member, who accused him of trying to strangle her in March.
The March affidavit does not specifically name González as the person assaulted. But she does say that the woman told police that Thompson “hit her multiple times throughout her relationship” and that Thompson told police that the woman was pregnant with him at the time.
The woman “reiterated that she was afraid of the suspect because he had threatened to harm her family and children,” according to the affidavit.
