Kiwanis Germany made a total of around EUR 200,000 in donations available for children affected by the flood disaster in 2021. As of today, these have been completely handed over, a total of EUR 130,000 went to the Ahr Valley, of which more than EUR 50,000 went to the Fluthilfe Ahr eV

Kiwanis would like to thank Fluthilfe Ahr eV for the excellent cooperation, especially with the quick and unbureaucratic help for children who were severely affected by the flood of the century. Many green areas, sports halls and playgrounds were destroyed by the flood. With the “Natur-Fit-Weg” project, which has already been supported by Kiwanis, children and young people are offered space for nature, nature experience and education at the same time. For this purpose, destroyed play and adventure areas are restored, but new areas are also opened up. Today’s donation will be used for more playgrounds of this type.

Kiwanis is a worldwide service club organization dedicated to the well-being of children and the community under the motto “Serving the Children of the World.” Kiwanis wants to help children and young people specifically, quickly, unbureaucratically and effectively where the state and the large welfare organizations react too slowly. The local clubs are primarily active locally with their aid projects. In the event of disasters such as the flood in the Ahr Valley, nationwide donations are collected to support the local clubs in their aid.

In the case of flood relief, the focus was initially on direct support for needy families on site, play and sports equipment and educational aids. In addition, there were measures to deal with trauma and support for the resumption of care for children and young people through kindergartens and social institutions – wherever Kiwanis clubs had contacts.

There were no Kiwanis clubs on the Ahr, so in Bad Neuenahr, the city that was hit the hardest, they worked together with the church communities, among others. The association Fluthilfe-Ahr eV, founded shortly after the flood in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, proved to be an ideal partner for Kiwanis.

The Fluthilfe-Ahr eV, with its 21 members and around 30 regular volunteers, has already collected over 1.3 million euros in donations and distributed them directly and unbureaucratically. Of this, around 950,000 euros went to families and senior citizens badly affected by the floods. Fluthilfe-Ahr eV has invested more than 400,000 euros in projects for young people, projects for senior citizens, educational and exercise offers and, with a focus on projects for children.

A complete youth center with containers was set up for young people, and projects such as “Dancing Against Trauma”, “Homework and Reading Mentors” and “Preschool Lessons” are carried out especially for children. With their project “Natur-Fit-Weg”, which is strongly supported by the Kiwanis, a unique project for children has been realized in the heavily destroyed infrastructure in the Ahr Valley, which will remain attractive in the long term. The Kiwanis Clubs Bad Dürkheim, Braunschweig, Bruchsal, Cremlingen, Heilbronn-Neckartal and Stuttgart have participated as sponsors of individual stations along the way. The cooperation between the Kiwanis and the Fluthilfe-Ahr eV, which began immediately after the flood, is direct and extremely effective. This direct cooperation makes it possible, even at short notice, to tackle and implement projects for children quickly and without a great deal of bureaucracy.

True to the motto of the Fluthilfe-Ahr eV “Everyone can improve our world a bit by taking responsibility!” Fluthilfe-Ahr eV and the Kiwanis are ideal partners who will continue to be there for the children in the Ahr Valley. In order to be able to do even better for the well-being of the children on the Ahr in the future, Kiwanis is planning to found one or more clubs on the Ahr.
