November of last year saw the highly anticipated release of God of War: Ragnarok, which has already become one of the most acclaimed exclusives for PlayStation. This sequel to the 2018 God of War reboot has been a huge success but originally I was going to have a different storysince the plan was to make Kratos die almost at the beginning of God of War: Ragnarok.
At the end of God of War 2018 we saw a mural that seems to herald the death of Kratos, so many of us believed that this was going to happen at some point in God of War: Ragnarok, especially since the mural is presented at the beginning of the sequel once again. Today we can confirm that the original plan was for Kratos to die and in a very iconic fight.
In a recent interview with MinnMaxGod of War: Ragnarok narrative director Matt Sophos revealed that the plan was originally for Kratos to die in his fight against Thor, near the start of the sequel. Said version of the story was one of the first ones they planned but it was eventually changed by what we received a few months ago.
“Kratos died in the fight with Thor at the very beginning of the game”, Sophos said in the interview before giving some details. As explained by the narrative director of God of War: Ragnarok, in the first sketches of the story the plan was for Kratos to die at the hands of Thor so that Atreus could bring him back from Hell, albeit with a twist.
“It was not a permanent death”, clarifies Matt, so from the beginning the plan was for Kratos to be back at the end of God of War: Ragnarok. However, the way in which he would have come back to life is interesting, as the game’s narrative director says that Atreus would have brought Kratos back from hell, but this would have happened a few 20 years later. “It was going to be a big jump in time“, Explain.
However, when taking these proposals to the director of God of War: Ragnarok, Eric Williams, he said that he did not want to do that because “Kratos has died and returned to life many times.” Instead, with the current ending where we see Kratos alive once more, Sophos hopes to send a message to players that his fate is unwritten.
