The North Duisburg Landscape Park is the ultimate crowd puller for the city on the Rhine and Ruhr. With over 1.3 million guests, the area in the north of Duisburg is one of the most visited parks in Germany. Spectacular events such as the summer cinema, the Ruhr Games or the Traumzeit Festival attract visitors and celebrities from all over Germany.

The Landscape Park Duisburg Nord: Facts about the former smelting works site

How big is the landscape park?

The landscape park Duisburg Nord is 180 hectares in size. From the disused iron and steel works you can walk around the three blast furnaces, the bunkers, inclined elevators and casting halls. Since 2000, the facilities have been under monument protection. There are various routes and hiking trails, several kilometers long, that lead across the area.

When does the light installation in the landscape park shine?

The British artist Jonathan Park developed a light installation in 1996 that bathes the industrial facilities in red, green and blue light. The colors are intended to remind you of the function of the individual parts of the system: Green stands for gas, blue for water and red for fire and heat.






Because of the Energy Saving Ordinance, the light installation had been switched off since September 1st. Basically, it should flare up at dusk. During the week, usually only a small part of the park is illuminated, at the weekend, on public holidays or during events, the full program runs.


How much does admission to the landscape park cost?

In principle, the landscape park can be accessed free of charge around the clock. For events on the weekends, individual areas may be closed or they can only be accessed with a ticket.


Can I climb in the landscape park?

The Duisburg section of the German Alpine Club has operated a climbing garden since 1990. In the burden bunkers, in which coke and iron ore were temporarily stored in the past, you can climb up the walls and towers. There are courses, also for children. Members can climb here at any time, everyone else has to register (cost: 10 euros). Where can I park at the landscape park?

There are 1500 free parking spaces in front of the main entrance. Access is via Emscherstrasse. During large events, you can also park in the alternative car park on Hamborner Straße (opposite Ikea). Additional shuttle offers are made for crowd pullers such as the Ruhr Games.

Can I have a barbecue in the landscape park?

In the past this was possible, there was a barbecue station in front of the bunker. Unfortunately, there have been visitors who have not taken good care of the park, so this offer is being reduced to zero.

Which films and shows are filmed in the landscape park?

Even Hollywood comes to Meiderich for its film shoots: The shooting of “The Hunger Games – The Song of Birds and Snakes” took place in the park, shielded from curious people. At least views of the made-up extras and the work processes in front of the scenes were possible.

Parts for the Dortmund crime scene, the Babylon Berlin series, the RTL disaster film “Bermuda Triangle North Sea” and much more have also been created here.

In the spacious power center and casting hall, television shows are also regularly recorded, including the casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS) and various other formats: the Ninja Warriors, for example, “99 – One: r beats them all!” There are also soaps here their place, most recently for example “Everything that counts”.

Das Street Food Festival

This year’s festival will kick off with the Street Food Festival: on Easter, from April 8th to 10th, there will be a culinary trip around the world serving up specialties from Thailand, Morocco, Korea and Argentina. Burgers, churros, strudel variations and specialties from the smoker grill will not be missing.

Die Ruhr Games

For the second time, the Ruhr Games, the largest international sports and culture festival, is taking place in the Landscape Park Duisburg Nord. From June 8th to 11th, young international athletes will show top-class sports from pole vault to bouldering and from table tennis to motocross between the gasometer and the blast furnace.

The Dreamtime Festival

The Traumzeit Festival has attracted music enthusiasts from all over Germany more than 20 times. Three days of live concerts, a varied food market and all of that in front of the backdrop of the smelting works – the combination inspires. Hundreds also camp in this ambience.

So far, 15 bands have confirmed for 2023, including Interpol as headliner. Dekker, Glass Beams and Caroline Rose are also confirmed for the festival from June 16th to 18th.

The summer market

More than 70 artisans will show their most beautiful treasures at the summer market from July 21st to 23rd. Not much is known about the “premium arts and crafts market”, but it’s worth going anyway.

Saturday and Sunday is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Open-air cinema in the casting hall – the municipal utility summer cinema

The Stadtwerke summer cinema inspires with beautiful cinema nights in the old casting hall. From July 12 to August 20, 2023, it’s time to start filming again. Last year there were 40 performances, 37,626 visitors came to the park.

The program for this summer is scheduled to be published on June 12th. Tickets go on sale June 21st. They will cost 13 euros per person, there is a discount for Stadtwerke customers.

The mixture of current blockbusters, classics of film history and movies with cult character has been attracting cinema fans far beyond Duisburg since 1996. And since the films only start when it gets dark, the beer garden is a popular place to be between the end of the day and the screening.

The Ruhr Triennial

Alongside Bochum, Dortmund and Essen, Duisburg is one of the venues for the Ruhrtriennale. From August 10th to September 23rd, cultural events between concerts and performances will again be offered in the landscape park.

The festival series was created in 2002 after the end of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park. It should fill the newly created industrial monuments with life.

The Halloween Run

When witches, undead and ghosts lace up their running shoes, it’s Halloween. In 2023, the Halloween Run will start again in Duisburg on October 31st. In the spooky decorated landscape park, the time is officially measured, but the focus is on having fun. Even before the start there is live music, children can have their face painted or carve pumpkins. The most unusual costume will also be awarded.

Christmas market: The schauinsland-reisen light market

More than 100 artisans will come to the Schauinsland-Reisen light market: From December 1st to 3rd you can stroll in the illuminated blast furnace setting, buy your first Christmas presents and take photos. The opening hours of the Christmas market: Friday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., admission 6 euros, advance sales begin in October.
