Large police presence in Springfield neighborhood

There is a large police response in a Springfield, Massachusetts neighborhood on Monday afternoon.

Authorities were seen investigating around 3 p.m. on Berkshire Avenue, including state and local police, and multiple ambulances. No further details were immediately available.

Earlier, Springfield authorities said at a news conference that there has been an increase in gun violence this year. From June 1 to August 14, 2022, there were 21 shootings, compared to 20 shootings in the same period in 2023.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno announced that he has met with senior officials from various law enforcement divisions to devise strategies from the law enforcement side to address this recent increase in gun violence.

The mayor noted that what is being seen is more fully automatic firearms and ghost pistols.

Mayor Sarno along with the Springfield Police Department are expected to meet again with the community stakeholder group on Thursday to continue their discussions about the recent acts of gun violence, as well as share the information that was gathered. about everyone’s programs and initiatives.
