While soaring vegetable prices continue in Algeria, a new phenomenon of food waste is observed. Some unscrupulous traders do not hesitate to throw large amounts of food in the trash. While many low-income households can no longer afford them, quintals of vegetables and fruit are found in dumpsters and waste storage areas.
After the scandal of discarded carrots in nature, here is theAPOCE (Association Protection and Orientation of the Consumer and his Environment) falls again on a stock of vegetables put in the trash.

This Thursday, theAPOCE shared pictures on his Facebook page showing several quintals of potatoes thrown into a dump in Skikda. A huge food waste at a time when the price of the latter is around 150 DA / kg and when many can no longer afford it.
Apart from the economic side of the thing, this practice also stems from an incredible lack of awareness towards ecology and respect for the environment. Assuming that this potato is not “suitable” for consumption, the solution, according to several experts, would rather be to redirect to animal feed. Better yet, use it as a fertilizer to improve future crops.

If traders get rid of surplus vegetables and fruits, it is so as not to have to sell them at knockdown prices, some say. And if opinions differ on this, all parties agree that inflation in no way justifies such an act.
The onion at 350 DA in the trash: huge quantities thrown away ascertained by theAPOCE
This practice of throwing away unsold food is increasingly seen in Algeria. A few weeks ago, theAPOCE was indignant at a similar act: cleaners fell on several kilos of perfectly edible onion thrown away in a trash can. A gesture all the more shocking as the price of this commodity was around 350 DA per kilo at that time.
Between speculation and food waste, solutions are awaited from the competent authorities to save the consumer from exponentially growing inflation.
