Latin filmmakers make a big splash at the Goya Awards

MADRID.- Cristèle Alves, Maite Alberdi, Glorimar Marrero and María Alché are the filmmakers nominated for Best Ibero-American Film at the 38th edition of the Goya Awards, which are celebrated today -February 10- in Valladolid. This category was inaugurated in 2011 and since then it has been dominated by men, who have won all the big heads in this section.

In this edition, Cristèle Alves is nominated for the Portuguese film living soul; Maite Alberdi for her Chilean film The infinite memory; Glorimar Marrero for Puerto Rican production Fishbowl; while María Alché does it for Ma’am, although it is co-directed with Benjamín Naishtat. Diego Vicentini also aspires to this category for the Venezuelan Simon.

Already in the 2018 edition, the filmmakers surpassed the directors in this category. Lucrecia Martel, Tatiana Huezo and Clare Weiskopf were nominated for Zama, Tempest y Amazonrespectively -this last film was also directed by Nicolas van Hemelryck-, but the Goya went to Sebastián Lelio for a fantastic woman.

In 2011, when the category was inaugurated with three nominated films, there were no women competing. Something that was also repeated in 2012, when one more new nomination was added, and in 2017.

The first woman nominated for Best Ibero-American Film was the Paraguayan filmmaker Tana Schémbori in 2013, who co-directed with Juan Carlos Maneglia, 7 boxes. However, the award went to Alejandro Brugués for Juan of the Dead.

The following year, in 2014, the Academy nominated the Argentine Lucía Puenzo for The German doctor. Wakoldabut he didn’t take the big head either, which ended up winning Blue and not so pink, by Miguel Ferrari. In 2015, Claudia Pinto was the only woman nominated in a year that Damián Szifron won the Goya for Wild Tales.

Equality was achieved for the first time in 2016, when the Academy nominated Maite Alberdi for The eleven and Marilyn Solaya for Wedding dressalthough none managed to win the prize, which went to The clan by Pablo Trapero. In 2022, for the second time, two women and two men competed for Best Ibero-American Film. This was the case of Melina León with song without name y The Siamese by Paula Hernandez. On this occasion, the winner was The mountain range of dreamsby Patricio Guzmán.

2019 was the year of Alfonso Cuarón and Roma in an edition in which only Marcela Said was nominated for Dogs. The same thing happened in the 2020 and 2021 editions. Thus, in 2020, Antonella Sudasassi (The awakening of the ants) was the only woman nominated against Alejandro Landes (Monkeys); Andrés Wood (Spider); and Sebastián Borensztein who won the Goya for The Odyssey of the Giles.

In the 2021 edition, Maite Alberdi was the only filmmaker nominated for The mole agentin front of Jayro Bustamante (The crybaby); Fernando Frias (I’m not here anymore); and Fernando Trueba for The oblivion that we will bewinner of the Goya.

In 2023, it was the first time the Academy nominated five projects. In this case, Manuela Martelli with 1976 and Tatiana Huezo with Fire night, were the nominees for a category that Santiago Miter won for Argentina, 1985.
