The developer Riot Games released the 2023 season cinematic for League of Legends this week, with a trailer meant to usher in the new season and get players excited for what’s to come.
The goal of cinematics from past seasons has always been that, and while it’s rare for everyone to be 100% sold on every cinematic, but this time around, players seemed particularly disappointed by the Season 2023 video.
And now, Riot Games acknowledged the sentiment within the community, agreeing that it “missed the mark” regarding what players were anticipating for the game’s season.
So this new trailer is much more reserved than what we’ve seen in the past, and while it offers a clever take on a walkthrough of Summoner’s Rift, players seemed to be missing out on the action element typically present in these types of cinematics. .
So Riot responded to the situation in a Twitter thread explaining the reasoning behind the cinematic and acknowledging that the intent behind this year’s seasonal cinematic could have been more clearly communicated:
“We’ve released a cinematic as part of the season opener every year since 2018, and make no mistake: everyone in League knows how much you love them. So do we! This year, there were some unprecedented circumstances that made us choose an alternate approach to the video for the 2023 season. However, we believed that it could still embody the wide universe and competitive spirit of League as we celebrate the start of a new season.”
“But we’ve heard your feedback, and we want to acknowledge that Brink of Infinity missed the mark of the action-packed, champion-starring trailer I was hoping for and has led to further speculation about our investment in League. Honestly, we should have been more forthcoming, which might have helped with some of that feeling and speculation.”
“We think League has a bright future and we’re investing in that, but we can do a better job of sharing those plans with you. We are committed to bringing you more details on what the investment looks like in the coming days. We really appreciate your passion and feedback, and the success of League would not be possible without your dedication. Thanks”.
