LGBTQ+ Pride Month: its origin and celebration in Puerto Rico

During the month of June, Pride Month is celebrated to commemorate and raise awareness about the fight for equality, dignity and respect for people who belong to the LGBTQ+ community.

This celebration began in the United States on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, a bar located in the Greenwich neighborhood of Manhattan in New York, where the “queer” community responded to a police raid.

It was after these demonstrations that it was established as International LGBTQ+ Pride Day and the month of June became Pride Month.

In any activity of the LGBTQ+ community, the rainbow cannot be missing, as a symbol of the fight for the rights of sexual diversity. But, since when and why is the rainbow used?

It was in 1978 that the artist Gilbert Baker created the flag with its eight stripes, each with a meaning: pink, sexuality; red, life; orange, health; yellow, light the sun; green nature; turquoise, art; blue, serenity and purple, the spirit.

However, currently the flag that is commonly used is the one with six colors, which include all those mentioned, except for pink.
