LGTBIAQ+ movement: what does each letter mean and what groups do they represent?

This June 28th is celebrated the International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day. This commemoration is celebrated every year because it was the same day, but from 1969, when in New York there were the stonewall riots, fact that marked the beginning of homosexual liberation and fight for their rights.

Much is said about the week of activities that take place during this week. However, what does this acronym mean? This refers to those who do not identify with heterosexual orientation. At first it was only LGB, but over the years more groups have joined.

What does each letter of LGTBIAQ+ mean?

Jorge Gil Europa Press
  • L: the first of the letters responds to the term “Lesbians”. It refers to the sexual orientation of those women who feel attracted to others of the same sex.
  • G: means “Gays”. It refers to the group of men who have affective-sexual relationships with other men.
  • T: stands for “transsexual” o “Transgender” and refers to those people who identify with the opposite gender to the one assigned at birth.
  • B: alludes to the “Bisexuality”. It is about that sexual orientation in which you have affective-sexual relationships with both men and women.
  • I: comes from the term “Intersex”. This is described as those who are born with both male and female sexual characteristics (genetic and physiological).
  • A: corresponds to the word “Asexuality”. It is the lack of sexual attraction towards other people. It is distinct from sexual abstinence and celibacy.
  • Q: this letter comes from the word “Queer”. defines all those people who do not want to be classified under traditional labels based on their sexual orientation and identity. They are not governed by heteronormative impositions.
  • +: this symbol tries to be inclusive with all kinds of realities and sexual orientations beyond those mentioned.

What you want to achieve with this type of movement is the inclusion of each and every one of the people who fight together for the gender freedom. Love freedom is another of the maxims of a group that is really necessary to continue achieving fundamental rights regardless of the sex to which any person feels attracted.
