The Chinese Loongson 3D5000 processor is said to offer better performance than current ARM chips. The CPU has 32 cores and should be used in data centers. With its own design, the dependency on foreign products is reduced.

After Loongson presented the 3D5000 server processor a few weeks ago, more details about the CPU have now been published. The manufacturer states that the chip has 32 cores based on its own LA464 architecture. Eight DDR4-3200 controllers ensure memory access at speeds of up to 50 gigabytes per second. A TFLOPS should be achieved as floating point performance. That is four times the performance of a comparable ARM processor. However, it remains unclear which model the chip is compared to. The power consumption is 150 watts.

Connection of four processors possible

In order to achieve higher computing power, noisy Tom’s hardware up to four Loongson 3D5000 can be connected to each other. With HyperTransport 3.0 it is possible to exchange data between the processors at up to 41.6 gigabytes per second. The connection is made via the 7A2000 bridge chip, also designed by Loongson.

With its own processors, China would like to become less dependent on foreign companies. The Loongson 3D5000 has a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), which was also developed in-house. The chips are intended for commercial use. However, it is unclear when the processors will be delivered.

Summary

  • Loongson 3D5000: 32 cores, 50 GB/s memory access, 4x ARM performance, 150 watt power consumption.
  • Connection of up to 4 processors possible, 41.6 GB/s data transfer.
  • Own bridge chip 7A2000 and Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
  • Dependence on foreign products should be reduced.
  • Commercial use, delivery unclear.
