Family that is respected! Anyone would say that they are quintuplets, but no, it is father and sons who make up the cast of clowns ‘The Cups’. It begins with Raúl Blas, the patriarch; then come Erik, Gianfranco, Sergio and Dominic, a three-year-old boy and the real showman of the group.

Raúl, since when have you been a clown?
I got to know this wonderful art at the age of 14. Where I lived, only the neighborhood circuses came and I remember that I would climb anyhow to see the clowns. I wanted to see how they were painted and rehearsals. And when I was 16 years old I met my teacher and great friend ‘Cocoíta’. At that age it was the first time I painted myself as a clown. Now I’m 45, imagine.

Where does the clown name ‘Vasito’ come from?
That’s how he baptized me ‘Cocoíta’ in honor of his first clown teacher, it was a loving tribute. I am the clown ‘Vasito’ and my children are the ‘Vasitos’, ha ha ha. That’s what we call ourselves artistically.
Are all your children clowns?
But of course. We are ‘The Cups Show’. My eldest son Erik is the clown ‘Thiabo’ and he also has a music band. Then come Gianfranco (Vasito Junior), Sergio (Vasito Kids) and my little boy Dominic (Vasito baby) who is three years old, but he is the most parakeet of all. Since he was two years old, he was already browsing while we were enlisting.

What tricks are the favorites of the ‘Vasitos’ family?
We do everything to make them laugh. Juggling, the rola rola, tricks with fire and bubbles, pirouettes, shows with the trumpet and the famous ‘one man orchestra’ where the little one is the one who breaks it. All my children are artists.
Are you proud that they have carried on the legacy of the red nose?
Clear! Everyone values being a clown and carries this gift of laughter in their blood. For me, being a clown is a profession. Not everyone can make people laugh. The show must go on even if you are suffering. That’s the magic of being a clown.

Have you had accidents during the shows?
More than accidents, we have had funny anecdotes. Some time ago we had a number with a puppy and he got so excited that he ran and knocked over the birthday cake. We had to improvise. Happily the people died of laughter. Of course we don’t have that doggy show anymore, ha ha ha.
What would you say to a young man who wants to be a clown?
It is sacrificial work. But if you’re going to do this art, you have to be committed and have the ability to make people laugh. And you also have to perfect yourself, take workshops, courses, learn a lot from expert people.
