Low salt consumption can extend life

Research conducted in Australia analyzed previous studies and determined that consuming less sodium has many benefits, including living longer.

The review was carried out on a dozen studies that had involved more than 35,000 patients, with an average age of 64 years and with higher than normal risks of heart disease.

The analysis found that eliminating salt or using a substitute reduced the risk of dying early from heart disease.

The American Heart Association recommends that most adults, especially those with high blood pressure, limit sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams daily.

Experts warn that people who eat a lot of packaged or restaurant food probably get more calories in their diet than is recommended.
