The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, thanked Congress this Wednesday for the approval of the decree that allowed the federal intervention of the security forces in Brasilia and considered that the attack that took place on Sunday at the headquarters of the three powers del Estado was carried out by “a group of crazy people who still did not understand that the 2022 elections are over.”
“What happened here (in Brasilia) I would not even like to think of as a coup, I would like to think of something minor, perhaps a group of crazy people who still do not understand that the election is over, who still do not want to accept that the electronic ballot box is possibly the most perfect electoral model that we have in all the countries of the world”, said Lula, quoted by the O Globo network, when receiving the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, and the vice president of the Senate at the Planalto Palace , Veneziano Vital do Rêgo among other legislators.
When thanking the congressmen for the approval of the decree to intervene in the security of the Federal District (DF), the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) stressed that the measure shows that people who do not want to respect the laws and the Constitution will be sanctioned .
“Any gesture that goes against Brazilian democracy will be punished within what the law allows it to be punished. Everyone, everyone will have the right to defend themselves, everyone will have the right to prove their innocence, but everyone will be punished,” he said.
In the meeting, Lula also made reference to former President Jair Bolsonaro, whom he criticized for not having recognized his defeat in the October 2022 elections.
“Unfortunately, the president who left power does not want to admit defeat. Even today I saw statements from him not acknowledging defeat. I can only consider that they are a group of crazy people, people with little sense of ridicule,” he said.
He also recalled that Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party (PL) filed a complaint in the Justice for the alleged security failures of the polls, but only in the second round, which earned him a fine for irregular action.
“They have already gone to court and the court has said what the electoral result was and has already dismissed their process and even sentenced the party that presented the question to pay a huge fine from the party fund,” Lula added during the meeting.
The meeting took place a day after the Senate approved the intervention of federal forces in Brasilia, according to the decree previously signed by Lula, which required the approval of deputies and senators.
