the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is studying the creation of a revolutionary project in Brazil. It is a state-owned streaming service, that is, completely free, to host different types of content, including movies, series and other programs made with public money. The project must be an arm of the TV Braziland can compete with industry giants such as Netflix, Globoplay and Prime Video.

Lula’s government studies the creation of state streaming

The streaming platform project was presented in 2022 during the transition period between governments and is being evaluated by the Ministry of Culture. The inspiration for the project comes from an existing one in Germany, in which the government uses a TV station and a streaming platform to disseminate national content for free.

Among the content displayed on the platform will be films, series, miniseries and documentaries that receive public funds. Any production company that receives money from the government to produce any content will be shown on government TVs, such as TV Brasil, and also on this new streaming.

Although it is seen as a competitor to streaming platforms, the Lula government’s transition team guarantees that these companies do not need to feel threatened. Some even talk about finding small producers and leaving aside the more glamorous productions. The idea is that some of this content is sold to companies that are already consolidated in the field, such as Netflix itself.

When will it be launched?

Without an official name, the alleged streaming of the Lula government is still in the evaluation process, but some names for the leadership of the platform have already entered the discussion, such as journalist Chico Pinheiro and even José Trajano. Nonetheless, the project should not get off the ground in 2023as there is no budget forecast for this.
