Lula points out to Maduro the importance of international observation in the presidential elections

CARACAS.- The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, spoke by telephone with Nicholas Maduro on Wednesday, June 5. According to an official note from Lula’s office, the president ratified his country’s support for the Barbados Agreements signed in 2023 between Chavismo officials and the Unitary Platform.

In this sense, Lula highlighted the importance of having a large presence of international observers for the elections. presidential on July 28 in which Maduro seeks a third term.

In addition, he expressed the expectation that “the current sanctions against Venezuela can be lifted, in order to help the electoral process advance in a climate of trust and understanding.”

The Brazilian president’s statements came days after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced the revocation of the invitation to the European Union, as an international observer in the upcoming elections, under the argument of the sanctions imposed “on the Venezuelan people.”

On June 3, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) of Brazil confirmed that it will not send electoral observers for the electoral process, but did not offer further details.

On April 23, Lula described as “extraordinary” that the Venezuelan opposition has a single candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia. At the same time, the president reiterated his desire that all sectors of Venezuela respect the electoral result.

Lula and Petro’s proposal

On April 18, the presidents of Brazil and Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, respectively, discussed “the possibility of a plebiscite” to reach a “democratic pact” in Venezuela.

“I transmitted to President Lula a proposal that was transmitted to the president Maduro and the opposition. It has to do with a possibility of a plebiscite in the upcoming elections” in Venezuela, said Petro, after a meeting with Lula in Bogotá.
