If you think of the world of cinema in 2023, then big franchises like Star Wars, Marvel or DC will dominate, but the general rule is: A current blockbuster can easily last 180 minutes and usually includes big Hollywood names and pop culture phenomena and world famous templates. The charming horror film M3GAN, produced by the prestigious studio Blumhouse (The Purge, Paranormal Activity, Insidious) comes. We tell you in our film review of the humorous scary flick by star producer James Wan (SAW, Fast & Furious 7, Aquaman) and director Gerard Johnstone (house bound), what the killer doll M3GAN can do and why the many parallels to Chucky don’t matter. We also clarify where the shock limit lies and how open one should be to the horror genre – of course we avoid spoilers.

M3GAN has been running since January 12, 2023 in German cinemas and not only has great success with us despite the blockbuster wave in the form of Babylon (by Damien Chazelle), Avatar 2: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Blumhouse film is regarded worldwide as one of the first surprise hits of the year. M3GAN is Approved for ages 16+. Whether there will be a harder, uncut version has not yet been finally clarified, but of course you can find out on pcgames.de!

Attention: Clear the stage for M3GAN

Anyone who has seen the Chucky remake, Child’s Play from 2019, has at least an idea in which direction the new 102-minute puppet horror with a strong AI component is going. Goal-oriented and cool-headed toy designer and robotic expert Gemma (Allison Williams, best known from the hit series Girls and get out) works for Funki and focuses her life on the constant further development of her many clever ideas. One of them is the complex children’s doll M3GAN, which has been equipped with artificial intelligence and aims to become the perfect playmate for small children. Once committed to a person, the toy shines with unwavering caring, complex behavior patterns, multiple talents and, perhaps most importantly, a strong protective instinct.

As promising and lucrative as the project may sound at first, Gemma still has a few problems on the way to mass production: One of them is company CEO David Lin, who is led by comedian Ronny Chieng (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Godzilla vs Kong, Crazy Rich Asians) is embodied and has not even approved the entire development. Nevertheless, a six-figure amount has already been put into the doll – oh, movies. Furthermore, M3GAN lacks important security protocols, additional research and analysis work and many other “little things”. So it’s no wonder that Lin scraps the expensive and time-consuming project, rebukes Gemma and wants to keep her busy with new tasks that promise real success for the company. Hey, lucky. Actually, the highly dangerous toy doll shouldn’t matter anymore, should it?

Pfff, who needs parents?

Actually – if it weren’t for the strong “I’m latte!” attitude of the main character of the horror film and a tragedy within her family. Because Gemma’s sister Nicole dies with her husband in a car accident, which traumatizes the nine-year-old daughter Cady and ends up in Gemma’s single everyday life without a guardian or other reference persons – really tragic, but fortunately Gemma knows how to help herself.

So the developer grabs her favorite creation, M3GAN, and hopes her niece gets the love and support she needs along the way – that’s parenting in 2023, bam! Additionally, Gemma plans to use the strong bond Cady forms with her new toy to convince her boss and the Funki board of her groundbreaking development. It should be clear how wrong this goes, so we won’t go any further into the plot about the killer doll in an American suburb.
