Akela Cooper, screenwriter of M3GAN: “I was without mercy”

We already have you talked about the film M3GAN, the horror film that was a hit at the box office these last weeks. But this success could have been somewhat hampered by a classification reserved for a high age, if part of his script had not been censored. Whereas it is rated PG-13 in the United States, in other words reserved for spectators aged thirteen and over, we have just learned that it was originally intended for an older audience. This is revealed Akela Cooper, screenwriter of the film, in an interview for the Los Angeles Times :

LA Times reporter: Speaking of violent horror scenes, the theatrically released version of “M3GAN” is PG-13. How gory was your script originally?

Akela Cooper: This is not to criticize Universal, I love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got into it and you wanted them to see the movie. There should be an unrated version at some point…I heard it was in the works. But yes, it was much more gory. His number of victims in the script was higher than in the movie. It wasn’t a massacre on the scale of Gabriel in “Malignant,” but she did. killed a lot of peopleincluding a few characters that James said to me, “I like what you’ve done with these characters, but I want them to live.” I was merciless, but again, it’s me. My humor is extremely dark.

The “James” that Akela Cooper is talking about is James Wan, director of Saw, Insidious, Conjuring, Malignant, etc… who collaborated with Akela Cooper on the script for M3GAN, and produced the movie.

A fun horror movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously

As the screenwriter recalls in her interview, from the start M3GAN was above all a “fun” horror film, which does not take itself too seriously. A genre that had disappeared in recent years, which earned him many screenplay refusals. Indeed, she deplores the fact that, very often, he was told that his script was good but too goryand not “high” enough, understand that the fashion was for psychological horror, more than for “simply” amusing horror. The horror movies took themselves very seriouslyand Akela Cooper often heard these denials accompanied by comments like “you have to wait for a gore film to be a hit again, and the market will be ready for your film”. She, preferred to be at the origin of this turning point, so she continued to submit her script until it was finally validated. Must therefore now expect to see an enhanced version of the cut scenes to ensure its PG-13 rating, although no date has yet been announced.

A sequel already in the works?

M3GAN tells the story of Gemma, a roboticist who works in a toy factory and creates a artificial intelligence doll dubbed Model 3 Generative Android … or M3GAN. As Gemma learns of the brutal death of her niece Cady’s parents, she becomes overnight responsible for raising and protecting an eight-year-old girl. While it is still only a prototype, Gemma assigns M3GAN to her niece’s education, without anticipating the dramatic consequences that this will entail. Very soon she is overwhelmed by the bloody events that will ensue … The movie is available in cinemas French since December 28, and a sequel is already in developmentaccording to sources from Deadline.
