Mexico City.- Madonna has once again aroused criticism for posing as the Virgin Mary in the Vanity Fair editions for Italy, Spain and France.

The singer graces the cover of three different issues for the month of February at the launch of the annual “Icon Issue” project that celebrates the legends who help shape modern culture.”

Images created by photographers Luigi and Iango highlight the singer as a weeping Virgin Mary, complete with a sword, heart pierced on the outside of her chest, and another in which she plays Jesus at a women’s Last Supper.

The publication disclosed that more than 80 contributors were involved, noting that it will also lead to a future exhibition, short film, and street art performance.

In keeping with her haute couture history, Madonna dressed for the shoot in designs by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and others under the direction of her regular collaborator, Swedish stylist B. Åkerlund.

In the article that accompanies the photos, Madonna discusses feminism, sexuality, religion and diversity, talks about her return to the stage and plans for her long-running biopic.

“I’m about to create another show, and I’ve been working on the script of my life for several years,” the singer told the magazine.

“This is a good time for me: I’m collecting ideas, getting inspired, hanging out with creative people, watching movies, seeing art, listening to music.”
