The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, issued a statement on Monday in which he explained why he will not travel to the CELAC Summit in Buenos Aires, while denouncing a “deplorable show” on the right.

In a statement issued by the Venezuelan government, they stated that the decision for Maduro not to participate in the CELAC Summit was due to a “plan elaborated within the neo-fascist right” and accused that its purpose was to “disturb the positive effects of such an important regional event, and thus contribute to the discredit campaign -already unsuccessful- that has been launched against our country from the North American Empire”.

The Venezuelan president sent the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto as head of the Delegation on his behalf. They pointed out that before “this scenario of extravagant plans”, they decided that this would be the most “responsible” solution.

Lastly, they thanked President Alberto Fernández for his “cordial invitation” to be part of the CELAC Summit and assured that he has an “unwavering commitment” to the development of the region.
