Crisis in Venezuela

On July 28, Venezuela held presidential elections and the results have been questioned by both the opposition and the international community, after the National Electoral Council (the body that governs Venezuelan voting) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner, with only a first ballot whose figures do not match statistically and without presenting the official minutes of the elections.

For her part, leader María Corina Machado declared that Edmundo González Urrutia is the new president of Venezuela and demonstrated that she has more than 80% of the records that prove it.

In response to the fraud, the Venezuelan population has come out to protest, while the Armed Forces and the so-called ‘collectives’ (groups of armed civilians) have come out to repress peaceful demonstrations.

As of the evening of July 31, the NGO Foro Penal reported 429 arrests and 11 deaths.
