The Franco-American musician shook the Touquet Music Beach festival last summer by insulting the President of the Republic.
Will Emmanuel Macron be insulted on one of the Coachella stages next April? Marc Rebillet, a Franco-American musician who made a name for himself last year by making abusive remarks to the French president during his performances, is part of the Californian festival’s program.
The electro musician started on the web in 2016, where he gradually gained some popularity. During confinement, his “quarantine streams” attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers. But his notoriety took a new step last summer, when he insulted the head of state on the stage of the Touquet Music Beach Festival, angering local elected officials and the festival. He repeated a few weeks later on the Olympia stage.
Summer controversy
Present at Le Touquet on the evening of Marc Rebillet’s performance, Emmanuel Macron had arrived at the festival after the artist’s visit and had therefore not heard these insults. But they resonated within the political class: the mayor of Le Touquet Daniel Fasquelle had estimated that “between provocation and gratuitous insult, there is a leap that has been made […] by this artist.
At the microphone of our colleagues from RMC, the deputy of the 4th district of Pas-de-Calais (of which Le Touquet is a part) Philippe Fait said he was “outraged by the behavior of the artist Marc Rebillet towards President Emmanuel Macron”. The deputy LFI-Nupes of Seine-Saint-Denis Clémentine Autain had also condemned these remarks.
Stage run
Coachella, undoubtedly one of the most prestigious festivals in the world, brings together the cream of American pop and hip-hop every year, while attracting international artists. This 2023 edition, which will take place over two weekends in April, announced its program on Tuesday.
In addition to big names Frank Ocean, Björk, Rosalía, Bad Bunny and Calvin Harris, several French-speaking artists will perform there. Notably Christine & The Queens and Belgian sensation Angèle. In recent years, the Californian festival has hosted Aya Nakamura, Stromae and the group L’Impératrice.
