On the occasion of the 17th day of Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille won Montpellier (2-1) on Monday evening. A logical success despite a little scare at the end of the game.

The Marseillais made the difference in the second period.

Olympique de Marseille consolidates its 3rd place in Ligue 1. On Monday evening, the Marseillais dominated Montpellier (2-1) at La Mosson, without however mastering the entire game.

Because the clear chances were not numerous in the first period. The two teams were engaged in a tough battle on the physical level and the ball sometimes went from one goal to the other. But it was the defenses that usually took over.

Clauss out through injury

With the exception of ‘nder’s shot from a tight angle, without danger for Omlin, only Clauss’ cross shot made La Mosson tremble, the Hrault goalkeeper so much forced to slam the ball on his bar! Perhaps the only real highlight of this first act, with the exit on injury of Clauss from the 24th minute.

But at the very beginning of the second period, Tavares (0-1, 47th), he showed efficiency on a magnificent sequence! Enough to consolidate the domination of OM who accentuated their lead thanks to the goal against their camp from Estve (0-2, 61st). We thought the phocen club was heading towards a fairly quiet success.

Tavares and Lopez relaunch Montpellier

But after the exclusion of Tavares (86th) for a bad gesture on Souquet, Pau Lopez made a mistake and offered a successful penalty by Savanier (1-2, 90th + 1)! Suffice to say that the Mosson pushed to see his team equalize, in vain since the locals will no longer have any situation. Despite this small scare, OM logically imposed themselves and consolidated their 3rd place.

Match score: 4/10

Despite the animation of the very end of the meeting, this poster did not really keep its promises. Clear opportunities have been slow to arrive. And Montpellier was generally not up to it.

The goals :

– After a cross from nder, Veretout’s header is pushed back by Omlin in Tavares’ race. The left piston of OM succeeds in his fake strike from the left and shoots Omlin from the right! (0-1, 47th)

– On a corner returning from nder, Estve, under pressure from Mbemba, scores with a header against his camp at the far post (0-2, 61st).

– On penalty, Savanier crosses his powerful strike in the skylight. Starting on the right side, Lopez can do nothing (1-2, 90th + 1).

Players’ NOTES

Maxifoot has assigned a score (out of 10) comments on each player.

Man of the match: Chancel Mbemba (8/10)

Another big game from the OM central defender! Always as solid in the duels, he showed serenity, even with a yellow card collected in the 7th minute. We have again seen him accompany many offensive actions with a lot of technical quality, like his pass for Kabor. Finally, he pushes Estve to score against his camp.

MONTPELLIER :

Jonas Omlin (5.5): shot by Tavares and his teammate Estve, the MHSC goalkeeper did what he could to delay the opener. He slams Clauss’ cross shot on his bar and deflects Veretout’s header.

Falaye Sacko (4): sometimes invaluable when it comes to covering his central defenders, the former Stphanois still showed major technical shortcomings. The Marseille pressing often forced him to get rid of the ball. Replace the 78th by Arnaud Souquet (not not).

Christopher Jullien (5): comfortable in his marking on Sanchez in the first period, the central defender lost the thread after the break. His clumsiness almost scored a penalty for his intervention on Tavares.

Maxime Estve (4): interesting in depth management and recovery, the young Montpellier player failed under pressure from Mbemba. His own goal almost wiped out his team’s chances.

Faitout Maouassa (4): little helped by his teammate Mavididi, the left side took on water at the start of the match with the races of nder and Clauss. He was probably happy to see the piston come out. He is nevertheless the author of a superb cross on which Savanier is a little short. Replace the 62nd by Nicolas Cozza (not not).

Jordan Ferri (3.5): certainly combative, the former Lyonnais was dominated in the midfield. He showed unusual technical waste for a player of his level. Replace the 78th by Joris Chotard (not not)who released nder’s strike on his line!

Leo Leroy (7): impressive for his volume of play, the midfielder was omnipresent in recovery! He was also inspired by the ball with great ball outings, including a small festival at the very start of the second period.

Arnaud Nordin (2): it’s simple, the Montpellier winger has done absolutely nothing. His teammates, however, offered him some interesting situations. But he was opposed by nder and Bailly. Replace the 62nd by Bni Makouana (not not)who got the penalty.

Tji Savanier (7.5): Montpellier was hardly dangerous and yet his playmaker still shone. We witnessed a new demonstration on the technical level. Apart from his goal from the penalty spot, his performance would have deserved at least one decisive pass, especially on his offerings for Wahi and Nordin.

Stephy Mavididi (3): not to mention his defensive oversights at the start of the match, the English striker has never posed a threat to the Marseille defense. The ball returned from the elbow could have cost him a penalty.

Elye Wahi (5): against the imposing Bailly and Mbemba, the striker resisted rather well. He was able to win duels that we thought were almost lost in advance. Mobile, he posed a problem for the Olympian defense in the first period, before gradually disappearing after returning from the locker room. Replace the 81st by Valre Germain (not not).

MARSEILLES :

Pau Lpez (3): apart from a good outing to make up for an error by Bailly, the OM goalkeeper spent a fairly quiet 90 minutes. But he arrives late on his Arian duel with Makouana and offers a penalty which revives Montpellier in additional time.

Chancel Mbemba (): see comment above.

Eric Bailly (6): opposed to an attacker as hard-hitting as Wahi, the Ivorian rather responded present. The Montpellier caused him a problem and stole a dangerous ball from him. But the central defender showed solidity, especially when he blocked Nordin’s strike in the second period. Replace the 66th by Leonardo Balerdi (not not).

Sead Kolasinac (6): facing a Nordin in poor shape, the former Gunner did not have to work to gain the upper hand. He had a 2-0 ball but his header lacked the power to worry Omlin.

Jonathan Clauss (not rated): it was not voluntary, but his cross slammed by Omlin on the bar was the only real chance in the first period. Injured after contact with Mavididi, the right piston had to come out. Replace the 24th by Issa Kabor (3), who did not score points at Mosson. His hesitation and clumsiness again caused ball losses and above all completely missed crosses.

Valentin Rongier (7.5): recovery as a ball, the midfielder was impressive! He totally dominated the midfield with angry drills or by neutralizing the opposing counters.

Jordan Veretout (6): as often, the former Roma player is not the most spectacular on the pitch. But his complementarity with Rongier and his ability to break the lines quickly contributed to OM’s domination. His header pushed away by Omlin brings the goal of Tavares. Replace the 66th by Pope Gueye (not)author of a shot frame but without danger for Omlin.

Nuno Tavares (6.5): for an unnecessary bad gesture on Souquet, the left piston collected a direct red card in the 86th. What tarnish his yet convincing performance, especially during a second period begins with a magnificent sequence to open the scoring. He had then chained the sharp climbs and the interesting situations, until his draping.

Cengiz nder (7): like his cross from the outside of his foot, the Turkish striker was particularly inspired! It is no coincidence that he is involved in both goals for his team. Also note his seriousness in the defensive withdrawal.

Dimitri Payet (5): not very influential and not very inspired, the Marseille captain was not there in the first period. He was more available after the break and could have become the decisive passer if Kolasinac had better negotiated his ball with his head. Replace the 66th by Matto Guendouzi (not).

Alexis Snchez (6): rather discreet in the first period, the Chilean striker was more found after halftime. He did not hide his frustration over the missed opportunities, like his free kick deflected by Omlin. Replace the 84th by Bamba Dieng (not not).
