Mayor of Miami-Dade expresses her support for reimposing sanctions against the Maduro regime

MIAMI.-Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava issued a statement in reaction to sanctions reimposed by President Joe Biden’s administration on Venezuela’s oil industry after Nicolás Maduro violated agreements to ensure fair elections.

“Today’s actions to reimpose sanctions on Venezuela are welcome, as they send a clear message that the disqualification of presidential candidate Maria Corina Machado by the Maduro regime is an attack on the electoral process and our democratic values,” Levine said. Cava is campaigning for her re-election to the position of mayor.

“The Venezuelan government continues to deny basic human rights in violation of the Barbados Agreement, and the Biden administration’s swift response by imposing sanctions once again reaffirms our solidarity with the Venezuelan people, including the thousands of Venezuelans who make their home in Miami.” Dade.”

This Wednesday, April 17, the United States reestablished the main sanctions against Venezuelan oil in response to the failure to comply with the electoral commitments acquired by the government of Nicolás Maduro.

The Treasury Department announced on its website that it had issued a replacement license that gives US companies 45 days to “close” their oil and gas deals and transactions with the Venezuelan state company.

Washington had repeatedly threatened in recent months to reinstate energy sanctions if Maduro did not fulfill the commitments made in Barbados with the Venezuelan opposition that contemplated holding “free and competitive” elections in Venezuela.

However, María Corina Machado, the candidate chosen by the opposition in the primary elections last October, was vetoed by the National Electoral Council. So was Corina Yoris, the academic designated by Machado as her replacement following the disqualification imposed by the regime.
