At the end of 2022, MediaTek introduced new chips for televisions that offer attractive new functions: such as support for four ports with HDMI 2.1 at a full 48 Gbps, Wi-Fi 6E and also support for the efficient video codecs AV1 and VVC. But at CES 2023, televisions with the new SoCs have so far been conspicuous by their absence. Now there is a glimmer of hope: Philips and Sony want to use the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 for upcoming TVs.

Some readers have certainly wondered before that e.g. B. Panasonic’s new OLED flagships, the MZW2004, only offer two ports for HDMI 2.1. That seems a bit small, because you would have already occupied them if you only connected an Xbox Series X|S or a PlayStation 5 and a soundbar with eARC. For other devices that require HDMI 2.1, such as a gaming PC or a second console, the only option would then be to treat yourself to a switch. This is exactly where the big appearance of the MediaTek Pentonic 1000 and Pentonic 2000 would be.

While the Pentonic 1000 are intended for high-end 4K TVs, the Pentonic 2000 are suitable for 8K models. Both chips are “Calman Ready”, so they enable extensive TV calibration with the appropriate software. Philips and TP Vision, which is behind the brand in Europe, have now confirmed at CES 2023 that the Pentonic 1000 will power the brand’s upcoming OLED TVs. The performance is scheduled for February 2023.

What about the LCD TVs? TP Vision is silent on this. So maybe you’re going for the weaker Pentonic 700 for them? Sony, on the other hand, wants to introduce new televisions in “spring 2023”, after surprisingly breaking with its traditions and not launching any new models at CES 2023. The new models from Sony are also supposed to use the Pentonic 1000.

Incidentally, Philips also sells 8K models, so it is possible that the Pentonic 2000 will also be used there. The new SoCs from MediaTek also have other advantages. For example, in addition to HDR10 and HLG, they are also ready for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision with Precision Detail. But don’t expect Philips and Sony to emphasize the use of MediaTek’s chips in their marketing. You usually emphasize other aspects.
