Medvedev, defending champion, is eliminated in the round of 16 in Rome

ROMA.- The Russian Daniil Medvedevwinner of the Rome Masters 1000 in 2023, was eliminated this Tuesday in the round of 16 of the 2024 edition by the American Tommy Paul, 16th in the world, with a score of 6-1, 6-4.

The world No. 4 had already suffered on Monday before beating Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, who came from the qualifiers and whom he ended up beating with a score of 7-6 (7/5), 2-6, 7-5.

Finalist at the Australian Open in January and then at Indian Wells in March, Medvedev hasn’t looked the same since stepping onto clay this season.

He lost in the round of 16 in Monte Carlo and then had to withdraw due to hip problems in the quarterfinals in Madrid.

The Masters 1000 in Rome, the last event before Roland Garros (May 26-June 9), was left before the quarterfinals without its current champion Medvedev, without world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, while The Italian Jannik Sinner, one of the attractions of the beginning of the season, does not participate in the Foro Italico, injured in a hip.

Of the eight top-10 players in contention in Rome, five have already been eliminated.

One of those who remains ahead is the German Alexander Zverev (5th in the world), who went to the quarterfinals by defeating the Portuguese Nuno Borges, 53rd, 6-2, 7-5.

The other is the Polish Hubert Hurkacz (9th), who beat the Argentine Sebastián Báez (19th) in a disputed match 5-7, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.

The majority of top-level tennis players are using the Rome tournament to arrive in optimal conditions at Roland Garros, an event that has had many protagonists throughout its history, including the Spanish Nadal, who could play for the last time in the prestigious competition this year.
