Meta announced this Thursday (13) the open source code for Animated Drawings, an artificial intelligence project that transforms drawings into animations, so that other developers can create richer experiences with the tool.

Animated Drawings was originally created by Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team as a 2021 web tool. With it, users can upload a drawing (in human format) and see animation options with the character — such as walking, dancing or performing funny movements.

Animated Drawings open source

Animated Drawings was launched in a demo version for the web with the objective of training the computational model in the creation of animations from the most different drawings. To do this, Meta asked for the user’s permission to use the image sent in the AI’s training — but there was no impediment to its use if the user denied the grant.

The expectation, according to Meta, was to collect 10,000 drawings to improve AI performance. The response, however, was greater than expected and, in a few months, the tool added more than 1.6 million images granted for training.

Interestingly, users were using Animated Drawings for other types of drawings, not just human-shaped figures as requested by the platform. Professional drawings, action figures, images of pets, birds, quadrupeds and even company logos were sent to the AI.

Users also expressed, through social networks and the internal feedback channel, the desire for more features and functionality, such as sound effects, backgrounds and text features. It was based on these requests that Meta decided to launch the open source version of Animated Drawings, allowing other developers to help expand the possibilities and experiences with the tool.

How to use Animated Drawings

Animated Drawings can be accessed directly through the browser and does not require registration or login to be used.

  1. Open Animated Drawings from the website sketch.metademolab.com/;
  2. Click “Get Started” to get started;
  3. Upload an image via “Upload Photo”;
  4. Choose whether or not to give permission to use the image for AI training;
  5. Crop the image to frame just the drawing;
  6. Fix the separation between character and background;
  7. Adjust the character’s points of articulation;
  8. Check out the AI-generated animation options.

The tool offers file sharing options in mp4 format for sending via email or access link. Also check out some apps to draw on your cell phone.
